CIF: Labeta named new assistant commissioner

John Labeta, La Costa Canyon High’s athletic director and girls basketball coach, has been named the new assistant commissioner of the CIF-San Diego Section, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Labeta will work alongside Jerry Schniepp, who started on Sept. 1 as the section commissioner.

FB: Nears leading Komets on and off field

Initially turned down for the job three years ago, Kearny alum Kenny Nears has led his alma mater to a 4-0 start in the Central League. It is just one of the many times Nears has managed to overcome obstacles.

Legend Chet DeVore passes away

Longtime coach, teacher and administrator Chet DeVore passed away on January 7. He was 92.

A longtime fixture in the South Bay, Mr. DeVore was a part of the Chula Vista High staff when the school opened in 1947 and was a highly successful football coach there. Mr. DeVore later served as Southwestern College president and was the founding commissioner of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, according to an obituary on the San Diego Union-Tribune website.

Mr. DeVore, a San Diego State graduate,  was also a highly decorated combat veteran, and was honored with a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.

A founding member of the San Diego High School Coaching Legends Committee, Mr. DeVore was honored as part of the inaugural class of Legends in 1999.

Services for Chet were on Monday, January 10, 2011, at Chula Vista Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting a donation to the Chester S. DeVore Scholarship at Southwestern College, Office of the President, 900 Otay Lakes Road, Chula Vista, CA 91910.


FB: Ralph Del Norte’s first coach

Del Norte kicks off its first varsity football season this fall, and Jerry Ralph will be walking the sidelines as head coach.

The San Diego Union-Tribune and North County Times talked to Ralph about starting a new program on the campus, which is located in 4S Ranch. Ralph is best known for leading St. Augustine to consecutive San Diego Section Division III titles in 2005 and 2006.

FB: Graham steps in at Castle Park

After 16 years as an assistant, Hans Graham has been named head football coach at Castle Park, the Union-Tribune reports.

Graham said his goals include growing the number of football players on campus. The Trojans have struggled in recent years, but have a winning history. Castle Park advance to the section finals four times and won in 1994 and 1996.

Coaching Carosel: Patterson, Hollingsworth

Orange Glen alum Jason Patterson has been named the new Patriots athletic director, replacing Sam Kristensen, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Kristensen left for a job in Idaho after serving in the position for one year. He was also the varsity baseball coach.

Calvin Christian has hired Brad Hollingsworth, the former head coach at Oceanside, as its new boys varsity basketball coach, the Union-Tribune reported.

For the past six years, Hollingsworth, who replaced Mark Carlson, assisted John O’Neill at Palomar College.


FB: Whitehead taking over at El Cajon Valley

Norman Whitehead is the new football coach at El Cajon Valley, the Union-Tribune reported.

Most recently at Monte Vista and Patrick Henry, Whitehead is hoping to turn around a program that has lost 12 league games over the past four seasons.
