CIF: Labeta named new assistant commissioner

John Labeta, La Costa Canyon High’s athletic director and girls basketball coach, has been named the new assistant commissioner of the CIF-San Diego Section, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Labeta will work alongside Jerry Schniepp, who started on Sept. 1 as the section commissioner.

BB: SP’s Flanagan leaving Eagles

San Pasqual girls basketball coach Beck Flanagan has resigned, North County Times’ Tom Sheridan reported.

Flanagan, 28, said he is applying to graduate schools with the intention of seeking a graduate assistant coaching position. San Pasqual went 65-26 during Flanagan’s three-year tenure.

BB: Bohman leading the Eagles

Herself a high school and college basketball standout, Eisha Bohman is trying to build a successful program as a coach.

Bohman is in her second year as varsity coach at Santa Fe Christian.

BB: Tarantino finds a new home at Army-Navy

After more than 25 years of success coaching at schools including Bishop’s, Tom Tarantino has taken his game to Army-Navy Academy.

Tarantino, 50, succeeded longtime Army-Navy fixture John Maffucci as both AD and basketball coach at Army-Navy. Tarantino talked about the change, the challenge and the upside of taking over the program in a recnet article in The San Diego Union-Tribune.

BB: Trousdale nearing 500 wins

In his 24th season, Poway girls basketball coach Jay Trousdale is one win away from 500 career victories, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Only Santana’s Wade Vickery (610) and Rancho Bernardo’s Peggy Brose (521) have posted more San Diego Section girls basketball victories than the 55-year-old Trousdale.

Coaching carosel: Lacsina, Rivera, Ormsby

Anthony Lacsina, an assistant last season for the Otay Ranch football team, has been named the Mustangs’ head coach, the Union-Tribune reported.

The report also said Stephanie Rivera will coach girls basketball at Cathedral Catholic and Brett Ormsby, the boys water polo coach, will also mentor the Dons girls.

UT: Bryant, Halfaker honored

Lincoln boys basketball coach Jason Bryant and Ramona girls volleyball coach Connie Halfaker were honored by The San Diego Union-Tribune and the San Diego Hall of Champions as the section coaches of the year, the newspaper reported.

Bryant led the Hornets to the section’s first Division II state basketball title. Halfaker’s Bulldogs won the program’s first section title in Division II.
