BB: Tarantino finds a new home at Army-Navy

After more than 25 years of success coaching at schools including Bishop’s, Tom Tarantino has taken his game to Army-Navy Academy.

Tarantino, 50, succeeded longtime Army-Navy fixture John Maffucci as both AD and basketball coach at Army-Navy. Tarantino talked about the change, the challenge and the upside of taking over the program in a recnet article in The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Soccer: TP’s Costello reaches milestone

Torrey Pines girls soccer coach Dennis Costello quietly reached a major career milestone, collecting his 500th career victory with the Falcon’s victory over Mt. Carmel.

According to the North County Times,¬†Costello, 64, has said he’ll retire after this season. In his 25 years, he has led the Falcons to 13 CIF San Diego Section championships or co-championships.

FB: Calvin Chr. gets new coach

Randy Kreglow was named the new varsity football coach at Calvin Christian, the North County Times reported.

Kreglow replaces Bill Stout, who resigned after one season to concentrate on his job as the Crusaders’ athletic director.

Legend Chet DeVore passes away

Longtime coach, teacher and administrator Chet DeVore passed away on January 7. He was 92.

A longtime fixture in the South Bay, Mr. DeVore was a part of the Chula Vista High staff when the school opened in 1947 and was a highly successful football coach there. Mr. DeVore later served as Southwestern College president and was the founding commissioner of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, according to an obituary on the San Diego Union-Tribune website.

Mr. DeVore, a San Diego State graduate,  was also a highly decorated combat veteran, and was honored with a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.

A founding member of the San Diego High School Coaching Legends Committee, Mr. DeVore was honored as part of the inaugural class of Legends in 1999.

Services for Chet were on Monday, January 10, 2011, at Chula Vista Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting a donation to the Chester S. DeVore Scholarship at Southwestern College, Office of the President, 900 Otay Lakes Road, Chula Vista, CA 91910.


FB: Elrod leaving Rancho Bernardo

Brad Elrod has resigned as Rancho Bernardo High football coach after 20 years with the program, the last four as head coach, the North County Times reported.

Tristan McCoy has been announced as Elrod’s replacement. McCoy was an All-CIF San Diego Section linebacker for the Broncos in the 1990s and an assistant with the team for the last six seasons.
