Hall’s Bob Breitbard passes away

Bob Breitbard, the founder of the San Diego Hall of Champions sports museum, passed away at the age of 91 on May 17.

Mr. B was involved in San Diego’s local sports scene for more than 50 years as a player, coach, team owner, builder and benefactor of institutions and organizations that helped put San Diego on the map as a professional sports town. At the same time, he was instrumental in preserving the city’s rich sports history and honoring its great sportsmen and women from the high school to professional levels.

A huge part of the Coaching Legends family, the Hoover High and San Diego State grad was among the first honored with the Meritorious Service Award when it was added in 2003. This year, the award’s name will change to the Bob Breitbard Meritorious Achievement Award, honoring Mr. B’s commitment to the San Diego High School Coaching Legends and the city’s high school sports community.


Coaching carosel: Pugh, Floco

Dennis Pugh has stepped down as athletic director at Mission Bay High, the Union-Tribune reports.

Pugh, who also served as football and baseball coach at the school, spent 37 years in all at Mission Bay.

“It’s time for me to move on,” Pugh told reporter Steve Brand.  “I want to give my full attention to the baseball team at San Marcos.”

Pugh is the baseball coach at Cal State San Marcos. Crista Allenhas been named the new AD.

In other news, former Clairemont football coach Rian Floco will replace Gene Alim at Otay Ranch.

Coaching carosel: Jarrard, Johnson, Andrassy, Morris

El Camino boys basketball coach Jeff Jarrard has stepped down after one season, the North County Times reports.

The story went on the say athletic director Sean Helgesen hoped former head coach Ray Johnson would consider returning after a season on the staff of Farleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey. Johnson said earlier returning to El Camino was an option, as was the position of head coach of Cal State San Marcos’ new program, debuting in 2011.

Johnson’s daughter Megan will take over as Carlsbad’s girls basketball coach, while Notre Dame alum Emily Andrassy will be the Lancers girls volleyball coach. Hoover High’s football program will be coaches by Cree Morris, who prepped at Orange Glen and played at San Diego State.
