FB: Gomes headed north

Paul Gomes is leaving Escondido High after nine seasons to become the assistant head coach at Santa Margarita Catholic, the North County Times reports.

Gomes will reunite with his mentor, Harry Welch. The pair worked together at Anaheim Canyon High.

“I’m going back to join my mentor, Harry Welch, and try to build a state champion,” Gomes told reporter John Maffei. “The facilities at Santa Margarita are second to none. They just built a new three-story athletic complex with a state-of-the-art weight room.

“Plus, the lure of playing in the Trinity League, what I consider one the best in state, is compelling.”
