Coaching carosel: Tarantino, Texler

It’s hard to imagine anyone but John Maffucci as athletic director at Army-Navy, but the school has found his replacement, the Union-Tribune reports.

Tom Tarantino will succeed Maffucci, who is retiring after 54 years at the school. Tarantino held the same position, as well as coached the boys basketball team, at Bishop’s.

Jason Texler, most recently at Helix after a historic run at El Cajon Valley, with take over the Scripps Ranch football program.

FB: Gomes headed north

Paul Gomes is leaving Escondido High after nine seasons to become the assistant head coach at Santa Margarita Catholic, the North County Times reports.

Gomes will reunite with his mentor, Harry Welch. The pair worked together at Anaheim Canyon High.

“I’m going back to join my mentor, Harry Welch, and try to build a state champion,” Gomes told reporter John Maffei. “The facilities at Santa Margarita are second to none. They just built a new three-story athletic complex with a state-of-the-art weight room.

“Plus, the lure of playing in the Trinity League, what I consider one the best in state, is compelling.”

FB: Sovacool steps in at LCC

Sean Sovacool has been named head football coach at La Costa Canyon, the North County Times reports.

Sovacool has worked the past five seasons at Palomar College as an assistant, and played locally at Fallbrook High. He follows Darrin Brown, who earlier stepped down to spend more time with his family.

BB: Bryant named top D-II coach

Lincoln High boys basketball coach Jason Bryant has been selected  the state Division II Coach of the Year by CalHiSports, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

According to the story, Bryant guided the Hornets  (29-2) to victories in their past 24 games, capped by the 74-59 win over Mountain View St. Francis in the Division II state championship game.

The spring edition of the San Diego High School Coaching Legends newsletter is in the mail, but Legends can get a sneak peek of the latest news and information by clicking here.

The newsletter features a photo collage from the November Legends Banquet, as well as information about the upcoming Legends on the Bay event.

The committee also pays its respects to former USDHS golf coach David A. Thoennes, who passed away recently and is greatly missed by the San Diego coaching community. Thoennes was part of the 2009 Legends class.

SDSU’s Fisher to address Legends

The college basketball season may be over, but the 2009-10 campaign will long be remembered by the Aztecs, as well as their fans and alumni.

Join San Diego State head basketball coach Steve Fisher at the upcoming Legends on the Bay event on Wed., April 28 at Marina Village. The third annual lunch will feature Fisher reflecting on the year and discussing the direction the program is headed.

Coaching carosel: Alim, Diaz, Wright, Floco

Football coaches Gene Alim (Otay Ranch), Sergio Diaz (Scripps Ranch), Michael Wright (Hoover) and Rian Floco (Clairemont) have left their respective head coaching positions, the Union-Tribune reports.

Alim stepped down a second time for health reasons, while Wright is looking forward to watching his son play at Steele Canyon High. Diaz was place on administrative leave, and Floco hopes to return to coaching at a new school after being replaced by Dave Bottom at the helm of the Chieftains.
