Moreno, Recasner named model coaches

Shannon Moreno of Mount Miguel and Glenn Recasner of El Cajon Valley are among 13 recipients of the California Interscholastic Federation’s Model Coach Award. Moreno coaches volleyball and softball. Recasner coaches cross country and track and field. The award recognizes coaches who have served as positive role models in their schools and communities.

Poway wrestling model of dominance

Poway wrestling has won 27 of the last 28 section championships and four state titles. The Titans also boast 12 individual state champions, all since coach Wayne Branstetter arrived from Oxnard Channel Islands High before the 1978-79 season.

A bad bounce may have ended the baseball career of Ron Pietila, but it opened the door for the Bonita Vista soccer coach to achieve success few have found walking the high school sidelines — 500 career victories.

Former player Sheehy leads Mavs

Gubba Sheehy followed a playing career that included the Olympics with back-to-back CIF-San Diego Section titles in 2006 and ’07 at Poway High. She has now taken over the reigns at La Costa Canyon, where she is growing the Mavericks program.
